Friday. What a day. And it was due to the first 2.5 hours of the day.
7:40 am- Tardy bell rings and I am about to start class when over the intercom, "excuse the following announcement. We will not be taking attendance until about 8 am due to the accident on the hill [down to the school]."
Alright, no problem I can handle this. The students who are here will pick topics for their research paper until 8, and then we will go to the project area to start researching. That would have gone well but there was only about 8 students in class at the time. Out of a class of 36, that definitely does not work well. Plan B, let them talk because I am not going over directions and a lesson twice.
7:55 am- Enough students are here and hyper because of the chaos on the hill (awesome). Gotta grab their attention and keep it for at least 5 minutes to go over directions and expectations in the project area (where all computers are located).
8:00 am- Time to head out! Move, move, move... we are losing valuable time! Students plug in mice, log-in, and take out notes.
8:03 am- I am paraphrasing this next part that was over the intercom..., "Please return to your classrooms. We are going into a modified lockdown..." [loud beeps that sound like fire trucks]... UH OH! I definitely did NOT receive an email saying we were having a lockdown drill, therefore, it must be real. As I stand on a chair, I yell to my students, "DROP EVERYTHING. Go back to the classroom. Do not pick any of your stuff up and move it!" Of course a couple were being sloths... moved their bootays right along. Back in the classroom I had to figure out what a modified lockdown is.
An actual lockdown we have to cover the door window with this cover, which I do not have for my room, and get all students to the corner away from the door where a suspect cannot see you. Well, my classroom, that is kinda impossible. Luckily for a modified lockdown (after reading my manual) I figured out that we can continue teaching, leave the lights on, and basically just lock the door while not letting anybody in or out of the classroom. Perfect, except for one thing...
All of their backpacks, pencils, notebooks, notes, books in general, my stuff, etc... is all out in the project area. A few choice words popped into my head. What am I supposed to do?! I have no idea how long we will be in a modified lockdown, no teaching materials, and my lesson plan (researching) is obviously flushed down the toilet. Kids are bouncing off the walls in my small classroom. These following various issues came up: my cell phone/iPod/money/wallet/ (you fill in the blank) is out in the project area, I have an early release at (fill in the blank), I have to pee, this room is too hot it feels like I am going to pass out, I am thirsty, etc...
8:20 am- EVERYBODY QUIET! (silence does fill the room). Give me 5 minutes to come up with a plan. During the next 5 minutes you need to be quiet and sit still. I will be with you in a moment.
8:25 am- I pop in the movie Up. Thank goodness for my room partner. I have nothing else to do with them, and if the admin wants an explanation of why I am doing this, then no problem. Furthermore, parents would rather have their student safe than grabbing a notebook from the project area.
8:45 am- Keep your students in class until further notice. Okay, no problem. Thanks for the update!
9:00 am- Keep your current students in class until 10:20. WHAT?! Oh, and you should be conducting the advisory lesson plan. Do I have that? No, I do not normally have advisory on Friday. My advisory partner teacher has the lesson plan. Great. Just great.
More moaning and complaining due to the fact the room was starting to really smell and get hot. There is no circulation. Not my fault.
10:20 am- You may release your students! YAY!!!
