Yesterday while I was working, Monica and I were having a conversation about who was opening Monday morning. Why? Normally I have been opening on a regular basis on Monday's but I was scheduled to close for our manager. OR if I didn't open, Monica usually opens but she knows she wasn't' scheduled since she was mid-shift. Needless to say, both of us were a little worried about somebody forgetting... what happened, did we need to worry?
When I woke up this morning, without an alarm for the first time in a long time (by the way, I woke up automatically at 7) I headed to the cafe. After I finished covering myself with the at least 6 inches of snow we recieved last night, I left. When I arrived, who else was there? Monica. But who was not there? Renae (who was scheduled to open). Apparently Renae did not know she was supposed to open, or look at the schedule. I worked on making drinks, taking orders and Monica tried to get a hold of Renae. Finally, Renae answers her phone at 9:30. Monica has a paper due at 5 pm and a final at 10:00, I told her to run off and I would wait for Renae to arrive. After she did, I ran off to the gym. I get another call from Monica at 11:30, wondering if we could switch shifts since her paper wasn't finished to submit. Okay, no big deal. I ran home to get showered up and look presentable at work...
As I get out of the car and grab my bag of "stuff" just in case if it is not busy, the first strap breaks. I take another two steps, the other strap breaks also. I was glad because I might as well get all of my accident prone, clumsy, whatever you want to call it... out of the way before I start my shift. As I enter the cafe, it is packed with people (good!). I get behind the counter and I recieve some great news... dun, dun, dun... the credit/debit machine is down, phone lines are down, AND our wireless is down. I could be wrong, but I don't think anything else could go out or be broken. What were we going to do? As for the credit/debit cards, I had to do it all old school, manually, that was a great time... there wasn't anything we could do about the wireless. We ran out of 16 oz cups, chai tea, bread, space for people, Jen's sanity, and lost a pitcher of steamed milk to the floor. BUT some friends came in to say hi today, so that was nice.
We will see how tomorrow goes... perhaps a little better when I close.
