Lessons Learned

Here are some lessons I have learned my first week...

1. Be direct- This is the one area my supervisor told me to work on for the next time she comes to observe. The way I was brought up was to say 'please' and 'thank you.' However, with teenagers you need to be direct. Example, you sit. Another example, you work now. Cut the fat of the directions and be direct.

2. Teaching is exhausting- Friday night I wanted to be productive; however, that did not occur. I laid down on the couch and didn't move much from there. Even today I am still sluggish. Teaching drains the energy out of my body.

3. Organization- This is 33.3% key to success in the teaching world. I have three different bags, 4 different binders, one bin with folders and dividers at home, one at school, and a box for the journals-- this is so far. I need more binders for attendance and grades.

4. Sixth period- They are the most trying because these students just don't care in general. They don't care about grades, who they get in trouble by (i.e. administration), don't listen, etc... On Tuesday I felt completely defeated-- didn't know what to do. Wednesday I started to nip it in the butt. I figured out what to do. I called in six students during JAG time (study hall time). I talked to them individually. It is starting to work out.

More later... again, back to planning.
